There are certain simple things that a person picking up a ukulele for the first time can be taught that might get them addicted. For example: learning the C, Cmaj7, and C7 chords (each requires one finger only!); strumming them in succession; and then seeing how they can accompany the first bars of Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head, A Simple Twist of Fate, and many other songs. This was one of my first uke discoveries, and I still get a full-body tingle whenever I play the progression. Another example: learn the standard plucking position (thumb -plucking down – for the G string, i.e. the one on top; index finger – plucking up – for the C, i.e. next string down, middle finger for the E, and ring finger for the A, i.e. bottom string); then play the beginning of Silent Night: thumb and middle finger together, then ring finger, then thumb and middle finger again, and then index and middle finger. It’s like magic! The next time someone is curious about your uke, try one or both of these trcks on them.
